Harsh Environment

The side of this road, Thanon Ratchaprasong, gets filled every day by small stalls selling a wide variety of stuff to the people walking by. I can only be amazed how these stall keepers can stand there for hours in the blazing heat and the dreadful fumes from the traffic behind them. Bangkok being a city of extreme contrasts, it’s likely that you’ll see a ridiculously expensive imported sport car going past that most normal people here couldn’t afford even if they would spend every baht they ever earn during their lifetime. It’s quite a disturbing thought. The title of this photograph comes from this environment being harsh to all living things, except if you’re one of the rich (top 20% richest own 69% of the country’s assets, while the bottom 20% own only 1%).

  1. What a dreamy looking tree – so appropriate for being shaded from the sun/heat 🙂
